One of the
most popular legendary creatures in Russian fairy tales is Baba Yaga. She is an
elderly lady living alone in the forest skilled at witchcraft, but
never uses it to improve her looks, though people in general think she is a bit
scary. Maybe the reason is her smile, she has few teeth and only one of
them is visible, no matter how broad is her smile.
Also, she has constantly been fantasizing
of eating young Russian princes and even children, presumably, cooked as meatballs.
To my knowledge, she has not committed an act of cannibalism yet. Possibly, she
is too sentimental for it: when princes or common Russians meet her during
their quests, have a sauna and dinner at her place, then tell her all about their
problems (usually something concerned with captured princesses or siblings), she
loses her appetite and even helps them to achieve their goals. She is capable
even of risking her long-standing friendships with other mythical forest dwellers
in her kind impulsiveness. Nonetheless, some parents in Russia continue to use unfavorable
image of Baba Yaga as a threat at bedtime.
